  • 12 Siliguri: Two sisters were arrested by Siliguri Police on Tuesday for intimidating and hurling sexist and racist abuses at four Nepali students. The women, Leela and Ruby Dutta, and the students, were tenants in a two-story apartment in Siliguri's Hakimpara.

According to complainant Ronita Lama, the two women in their mid-40s banged on the students' window with a hammer. Upon protesting, they were met with verbal abuse and threatened with physical harm. Another student, Diksha Thapa, said that this was the third time in a month that such an incident had happened.

Owner of the house Pankaj Thakur said: "The students mentioned that the two accused used abusive language and made derogatory remarks about their caste. I immediately informed the concerned authorities. If the accused had any issues, they should have brought them to my attention. Such behaviour is completely unacceptable.

" Police said a case had been registered and an investigation was on.

GTA chief executive Anit Thapa condemned the incident and wrote a letter to the Siliguri police commissioner demanding strict action against the culprits. Thapa said Ronita was targeted with offensive and derogatory remarks aimed at her ethnic identity and the Gorkha community at large.
