• Opposition accuses TMC councillor of name duplication in voter list

  • Opposition leader Shuvendu Adhikari has alleged that Kabirul Alam, Trinamul Congress councillor of Ward 19 of Dankuni Municipality, has his name listed twice in the voter rolls.

In a Facebook post featuring Kabirul Alam’s name and photograph, Mr Adhikari claimed that Alam’s name appears in two separate locations and labelled him a “fake voter”. According to Mr Adhikari, Alam is registered in both Ward 20 and Ward 19, specifically in Booths 291 and 297. He alleged that this amounted to a “vote-stealing tactic”, adding that there are multiple instances of duplicate names in voter lists across West Bengal.

Responding to the allegations, Kabirul Alam explained that his ancestral home is in Ward 20 of Dankuni, where his father and grandfather still reside. He also owns a home in Ward 19, where he currently serves as councillor. His residence is located opposite Dankuni station in Ward 15.

Alam’s wife, Jahedunnesa, was councillor of Ward 19 from 2015 to 2022. Alam won the seat in the 2022 elections. He said: “In Chanditala Assembly constituency No. 194, my family home remains in Ward 20 of Dankuni, and the electricity meter there is in my name. Later, I purchased land in Mrigala, Ward 19, where I am now councillor and also president of the Dankuni City Trinamul Youth Congress. I am not a fake voter. I am a true Indian, and a Bengali.”
