Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is set to undertake a mass drive to plant and maintain around 25,000 trees across New Town. Different flower and fruit-bearing with an average height of 15 feet will be planted on the roadside, median dividers, and other vacant open green spaces according to the suitability of the soil. Agencies engaged for the drive will be asked to complete the plantation within a month, followed by nursing the trees for the next two years.
Agencies appointed to carry out the drive will need to prepare the beds where saplings will be planted. They will also be responsible for planting and maintaining the trees by setting up bamboo gabions around the planted trees. Trees such as Bakul, Krishnachura, Radhachura, Cassia, Bilati Jarul, Ashoke, Kadam, Jangli Badam, Shimul, Karanj, Chatim, Sirish, Arjun, Swarnachampa, and Mahogany will be planted, officials said.
Over the years, NKDA planted small and medium-sized trees off the main arterial road that do not have very large canopies. In Salt Lake area, the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working on plans to plant around 200 fruit trees across the township.
