Members of Trinamul Mahila Congress staged a sit-in demonstration at Gandhi statue in Mayo Road to protest against the attack on Bengali-speaking migrant labourers.
Chandrima Bhattacharya, president Trinamul Mahila Congress said it was most unfortunate that Bengali-speaking migrant workers are being attacked and harassed in different BJP-ruled states. “They have been picked up by the police and have not been released though they produced all valid documents. This flouts the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution,” she said.
The demonstration also saw the presence of minister Shashi Panja, MP Mala Roy, Bidhannagar mayor Krishna Chakraborty and Priyadarshini Hakim.
It may be mentioned that following the instruction of party’s chairperson Mamata Banerjee, the MPs both in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are speaking in Bengali. She took part in a rally to protest against the attack on Bengali-speaking workers in Bolpour in Birbhum early this week. She will take part in another rally on similar issues at Jhargram on 6 August. She has requested the migrant workers to come back to Bengal and assured every protection to them including jobs.
