  • Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to visit a Ghatal in West Midnapore on 5 August to survey the flood-like situation there, said Nabanna sources.

The visit, a day ahead of her proposed plan to visit Jhargram, on 6 August, attains much importance.

Nabanna sources claimed that Miss Banerjee is likely to hold an administrative meeting to streamline the efforts in providing relief to the marooned people apart from directing relief and rescue efforts and the rehabilitation process.

Around 13 wards under the Ghatal civic body and five gram panchayat areas are under water. Attendance in schools was thin, forcing many schools to postpone examinations.

Meanwhile, amid alleged release of excessive waters by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), a worried state secretariat at Nabanna today wrote to the DVC for releasing waters without a proper plan in place.

As sources claimed, chief engineer of the state irrigation department has sent the letter, asking the DVC to release waters adhering to a proper plan.

The DVC had in the last 24 hours released 49,000 cusecs of waters, which Nabanna officials claimed, would further precipitate the crisis as most rivers are in a spate.
