CBI yet to conclude RG Kar probe, doctors’ forum demands answers

Members of Abhaya Mancha, a doctors’ forum formed after last year’s rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, staged a protest rally outside the CBI office at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake on Friday.
Holding broomsticks, the protesters alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation was deliberately delaying its probe into the case, claiming the agency was working in collusion with the state government.
“The CBI is working on an understanding with the state government. Even after so many months since the crime took place at RG Kar Medical College, they are yet to reach any conclusion,” said Abhaya Mancha joint convenor Tamonas Chaudhuri.
On 9 August last year, an on-duty post-graduate trainee was raped and murdered inside the RG Kar campus, sparking nationwide outrage. While Kolkata Police initially arrested one person, the CBI later took over the case following a Calcutta High Court order and also named the same individual – Sanjay Roy – as the sole accused.
Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment till death by a trial court on 20 January. However, the CBI continues to probe the alleged conspiracy angle.
To mark a year since the incident, two programmes have been scheduled for 9 August in the city. One of them is a protest march to Kalighat, the residence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. On the same day, Abhaya Mancha members will also observe Raksha Bandhan. Separately, on 14 August, the forum called for a ‘Reclaim the Night’ march from 9 p.m. to midnight across Kolkata and the adjoining suburbs.
