  • Mayor Firhad Hakim today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah to give up the divide-and-rule politics that will lead to disaster in future.

Mr Hakim alleged that the Bengali-speaking poor migrant workers have been harassed in Delhi.

Sabina Bibi, a resident of Malda, who had worked in Delhi, narrated how she had been assaulted and humiliated by police for speaking Bengali language. She along with her family members came back to Kolkata. She alleged that her son had been assaulted by police. She said she was picked up by police on the ground that she was a Bangladeshi. When she said she was not a Bangladeshi, she was assaulted and told that everyone in Bengal is Bangladeshi. She alleged that she had to pay Rs 25,000 to the police. The police did not take her to hospital.

Her statement demolished the claim by Delhi Police that her kid had not been beaten up. “It was a harrowing experience. They told us that even Mamata Banerjee is a Bangladeshi. We were tortured because we are poor. They threatened us with dire consequences if we reported the matter to the police.”

Kunal Ghosh, state secretary of Trinamul Congress said: “The migrant workers had been humiliated and tortured by police. We have workers from other states but we do not misbehave with them. The BJP is heading for a disaster and will have to pay a heavy price if they continue to play divisive politics.”
