  • The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities have urged people who are suffering from fever to get their blood samples tested as the current hot and humid weather is ideal for the multiplication of dengue-bearing Aedes mosquitoes.

Senior civic officials of the health department said everyone should be cautious, particularly those who are suffering from fever to get their blood samples tested to ensure that they are not afflicted with dengue. “The incessant rain followed by hot and humid atmosphere is ideal for the multiplication of Aedes mosquitoes. The cases may go up, if people are not cautious. This request is not to scare anyone, but to make them conscious and so that they can take precautionary measures,” said Debashis Biswas, chief vector control officer and OSD of KMC’s health department.

People are being requested to clear the containers meant to store water once in a week. The flower vase should be cleaned once every week and garbage should not be offloaded in the premises. In case of office buildings, the broken furniture often kept on the rooftop should be removed and the used tyres kept in the backyard of police stations should be removed. “The dengue-bearing mosquitoes are born in clear water and so the rain water accumulated in empty, used tea cups and used tyres serve as ideal breeding ground,” senior civic officials said.

The civic authorities have intensified door-to-door vigil and the visiting teams inspect the overhead tanks and underground reservoirs. The civic authorities have issued 8,500 notices on house owners, secretary of apartments and housing complexes where mosquito larvae have been found.

The civic body has blood collection and testing facility in all the 144 urban primary health centres (UPHC). The UPHCs are situated in the wards. Apart from this, the civic authorities have 15 dengue detection centres across the city where sophisticated machines have been installed. The reports are informed to the people whose blood samples have been tested via SMSs. In case of both malaria and dengue, medicines are given to the person afflicted with the disease free-of-cost. There are experienced doctors to treat patients suffering from diabetes, heart ailment and breathing related diseases and medicines are given free.

The civic officials regretted people feeling that their treatment has not been done properly as the medicines are given free-of-cost.
