Rebel Trinamul Congress leader Humayun Kabir from Bharatpur constituency in Murshidabad may float a new political party, hardly 10 months ahead of the Assembly polls in West Bengal.
Mr Kabir’s new party would contest in around 50 Assembly seats, mostly dominated by Muslims in five districts like South Dinajpur, North Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad and Nadia in the 2026 elections in the state.
While speaking to media the rebel legislator on Wednesday said: “I have no resentments against Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of the party. But I am very worried about the party’s Murshidabad district leaders, who are not following her instructions.”
“The district leadership does not give any respect to me while junior leaders are given importance in different programmes organised by the party. I may form a new party because I am badly upset with district leaders who are misusing the power of our party chief Mamata Banerjee,” Mr Kabir said.
“There is no scope to go back to either Congress or BJP again. I am giving a deadline till 15 August so that the party chairperson can think over my grievances,” he said.
A senior leader of the ruling party in the state, said: “Anyone can form a new political platform if the BJP provides funds. I don’t know whether the saffron camp is funding him to divide minority vote banks. But it won’t work because people will vote for Mamata Banerjee to bring her to power in the state again for the fourth time.”
In March, the disciplinary committee had issued a show-cause letter to him for making communal statements.
He had replied to the notice and said he won’t apologise for his remarks protesting against the Leader of Opposition (LoP), Suvendu Adhikari’s diatribe allegedly against Muslims MLAs belonging to the ruling party.
