Tensions flared in the Molandi village of West Bengal’s Kaliganj since Monday night after a police crackdown on individuals allegedly involved in protests demanding a judicial probe into the death of a young girl named Tamanna. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI-M has accused police of using force and intimidation to silence voices demanding justice. According to local CPI-M leader Debashis Acharya, police raided the village around midnight to arrest party workers Sheikh Saddam and Sheikh Sukh Mohammad, both named in an earlier criminal case. The party alleged that the arrests were part of a wider strategy to suppress the movement surrounding Tamanna’s death, which has sparked outrage and repeated demonstrations in the region.
