A contractual labourer fell from 40 feet above and was killed in National institute of Technology (NIT), Durgapur. The incident occurred on Monday, when one Kanai Barua, a contractor labourer who was working in NIT Durgapur fell from a height of 40 feet. Sources said that around 10.30 to 11 a.m. he was working as an asbestos labourer accidentally slipped from a height of around 40 feet height. He was quickly taken to a private super specialty hospital in Durgapur’s Gandhi More and later to another private hospital in B Zone.
After a post-mortem today his dead body was handed over to his family members. The family members squatted in front of the main gate of NIT Durgapur seeking compensation with the dead body kept inside a vehicle.
More than three hours the locals gheraoed the main gate and agitated. INTTUC of Durgapur leader Bunty Singh after hearing the news reached the spot and said that the victim has two small kids and his widow needs compensation. After meeting the NIT Durgapur management he has sought a compensation of Rs 13 lakh.
The family members said that the accident was due to the victim not wearing any safety belt and all safety norms have been flouted.
