Husband kills wife, cooks up story to confuse police

A man in Nadia’s Nakashipara has been arrested for shooting dead his wife and then staging a story of a miscreant attack to mislead the police — a desperate ploy that collapsed under interrogation.
The murder, which occurred on Monday night in the Kalibas area under Nakashipara police station, has triggered widespread shock. The accused, Haidar Dafadar, 35, is no stranger to crime — police records show at least six previous cases of murder and rape against him. The victim, Mahila Dafadar, 38, was his wife, whom he had allegedly coerced into marriage several years ago, despite the age gap between them.
Investigations revealed that Haidar’s relationship with his wife had soured, particularly after he re-established contact with his former wife. Resentment over his current wife being older, along with renewed intimacy with the previous partner, appears to have fuelled tensions at home.
Police said that on Sunday night, Haidar forced Mahila out of their room in her parental home and took her to an adjoining chamber, locally referred to as shalar ghor (victim’s brother house). There, he shot her at close range. To deflect suspicion, Haidar then cried out for help, claiming that a group of unidentified assailants had broken in and fired at his wife.
Neighbours rushed to the scene and found Mahila bleeding profusely. She was taken to Bethuadahari Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. However, Haidar’s version of events quickly came under doubt. Police, acting on specific leads, learned that he was seen wielding a firearm even as he wept and alerted others.
Confronted with the evidence, Haidar confessed to the killing. Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural), Uttam Ghosh, told The Statesman, “We had credible information that Haidar had the firearm in his hand during the incident. On thorough questioning, he admitted to murdering his wife. His account of an attack by miscreants was fabricated.”
