  • Taking a serious note of the death of students at academic institutions in Odisha and Uttar Pradesh, both of which have BJP-led governments, the Trinamul Congress leaders have criticised the saffron party for not ensuring the safety of the students in the states. They have also taken on the National Commission for Women for not being proactive in the states, which have BJP as the ruling party.

The TMC, in its official X handle, put out two posts. One read: “@narendramodi lands in Bengal to preach about “women’s safety,” while in @myogiadityanath’s Uttar Pradesh, a second-year BDS student of Sharda University in Greater Noida died by suicide after being subjected to mental harassment and humiliation at the hands of two faculty members.

“These abusers, cloaked in academic authority and shielded by political muscle, prey on vulnerable students. @BJP4India’s moral posturing collapses under the weight of their own failures. Shame on Modi. Shame on Yogi. And shame on BJP’s culture of complicity.”

The other post in X read: “In Double Engine states, victims of abuse are driven to take extreme steps because they know the administration, police, @NCWIndia, and the entire system are on @BJP4India’s payroll.

“A second-year BDS student of Sharda University died by suicide citing humiliation and mental harassment by faculty members. What did @myogiadityanath’s @Uppolice do? Brutally lathi-charged students demanding justice.*

“And BJP dares to preach about “women’s safety” in Bengal? Shameless. Inhuman. Criminal.”

Trinamul Congress leader, Chandrima Bhattacharya on Saturday came down heavily on the Odisha government, where a 15-year-old girl was set on fire by three miscreants in Puri in broad daylight. She is battling for her life in a hospital.

Chandrima Bhattacharya said that Mr Modi’s slogan of ‘beti bachao’ is ringing hollow as women are dying in the states where his party is in power. “Where is the NCW now? They are busy in states ruled by non BJP parties finding out problems there and overlooking places like Odisha and UP,” she said.

Highlighting the case, women and child development minister Dr Shashi Panja asked why the national women commission and national child commission members are absent in Odisha. “They wash their hands when a crime on women takes place in BJP-ruled states and rush to Bengal to probe into any incident,” she said on Saturday.
