Twin trough lines coupled with a brewing low pressure over Bay of Bengal is likely to bring heavy rainfall to the districts of south Bengal from 23 July to 25 July.
According to the local weather office, the monsoon trough today passed through the centre of a depression over northwest and adjoining areas of northeast Rajasthan, Fatehgarh, Muzaffarpur, Bankura, Contai and then east southeastwards to northeast Bay of Bengal. Another trough line ran from central parts of north Bihar to Odisha across Jharkhand. The twin weather systems brought heavy downpour to Kolkata, Howrah and other parts of South Bengal today. The city was lashed with heavy showers of 84mm in 24 hours while the downpour was heavier particularly between 12 to 2 p.m.
According to the data from Kolkata Municipal Corporation, many parts of South Kolkata received rainfall above 80mm. Places including Chetla, Kalighat and Mominpur recorded heavy showers of 91mm, 87mm and 83mm respectively as cumulative rainfall of the day.
For the next two days, north Bengal is anticipated to get drenched with heavy rain. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an orange warning with ‘very heavy rainfall’ for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts for tomorrow while south Bengal is tipped to get light to medium rains.
However, after a break with moderate showers and thunderstorms for the next two days, the south Bengal region is predicted to get yet another spell of heavy showers from 23 July. According to the weather scientists a fresh low pressure area is likely to be formed over north Bay of Bengal around 24 July. Considering the presence of monsoon flow and strong moisture incursion, districts of south Bengal are tipped to get ‘heavy rainfall’ from 23 to 25 July. The districts of South 24-Parganas, East Midnapore and West Midnapore are predicted to get heavy downpour on 23 July. The three districts are tipped to get more intense showers with a prediction of ‘very heavy rainfall’ on 24 July.
