  • A deep depression over southeastern Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh is expected to bring widespread rainfall across the region on Tuesday, with heavy showers likely in 11 districts, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The system, currently situated about 90 km north of Kolkata and 50 km east of Bardhaman, is likely to move northwestwards and enter Jharkhand within the next 24 hours. As a result, the intensity of rainfall over southern West Bengal is expected to ease from Wednesday. On Tuesday, scattered light to moderate rainfall is expected across all districts of South Bengal, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind speeds ranging between 30-40 km/h. Districts including Purulia, Bankura, East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Murshidabad are likely to witness heavy rain and gusty winds.

Kolkata is forecast to remain overcast throughout the day, with intermittent showers keeping daytime temperatures below normal. High humidity levels may cause discomfort in the absence of rainfall. In North Bengal, heavy rainfall is expected in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar on Tuesday. The wet spell is likely to continue through the weekend, with particularly intense showers forecast for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri on Saturday, and Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on Sunday.

Other northern districts are likely to receive scattered rain throughout the week. The IMD has warned of rough sea conditions near the coasts of West Bengal, Odisha, and Bangladesh. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on Tuesday morning. Authorities have also cautioned about potential damage to crops and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Visibility may reduce during heavy downpours, possibly disrupting traffic and leading to congestion in urban centers.
