  • V Solomon Nesakumar, additional commissioner of police, urged two-wheeler riders to drive carefully and observe traffic rules.

He was addressing a gathering to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the Rider’s Community of Howrah at the Iran Society hall on Sunday evening.

Mr Nesakumar, who was the deputy commissioner of city police and an avid two-wheeler rider, said it was unfortunate that many young riders do not obey traffic rules and often ride without helmets. “Ride carefully and obey traffic rules always remember that your family members, well wishers and friends are waiting for you. So, do not invite accidents by driving at high speed particularly during monsoon,” he said.

Long distance biking has become a major sport now with both men and women riders taking part. A lady rider narrated how she had reached Gurudamber Lake in Sikkim on a 200 cc motorcycle. “The road was slippery and I fell down from my motorcycle. But I did not give up and was able to reach the destination situated at more than 14,000 feet,” she said.

There was a cultural programme to celebrate the occasion. The bikers driving heavy motorcycles exchanged their experiences and how they had overcome all odds during their trips.
