Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) handled an impressive 17.186 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in Q1 of the financial year 2025-26 in April to June marking a 21.21 growth compared to the 14.2 MMT handled in the corresponding period last year.
The port also experienced a significant surge in container volume. In June 2025 alone, SMPK handled 81,000 TEUs, a substantial 25 per cent year-on-year growth from 65,000 TEUs in June 2024. Overall, the port recorded 234,270 TEUs in the April to June 2025 quarter, reflecting a 29.02 per cent increase over the same period last year.
The upward momentum, according to the city port, was comprehensive, with several key commodities demonstrating impressive growth. While vegetable oil traffic reached 1.095 MMT with an increase of 33.21 per cent, coking coal throughput climbed to 2.653 MMT, registering 34.28per cent growth.
Likewise, petroleum, oil and lubricants volumes saw a healthy rise, touching 2.495 MMT with a growth of 14.45per cent.
With its twin dock systems—Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC) —SMPK continues to play a critical role in enhancing the logistics efficiency of eastern and northeastern India, as well as serving landlocked neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bhutan.
