  • Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has urged people to promote responsible driving habits and ensure safer roads for all and to take a pledge to drive responsibly.

On Safe Drive Save Life Day she wrote in her X handle: “Today we observe Safe Drive Save Life Day, an initiative launched to raise awareness about road safety, promote responsible driving habits, and ensure safer roads for all. Let’s pledge to drive responsibly, follow traffic rules, and keep our roads safe for all.”

The weeklong Safe Drive Save Life programme launched across the state came to an end today. It was launched by the commissioner of police Manoj Kumar Verma.

During the weeklong programme, a massive awareness campaign was launched. The drivers were requested to maintain speed and give up rush driving while the pedestrians were asked to follow traffic rules while crossing the roads. Booklets and pamphlets were distributed among the people by the traffic guards.

Special drives had been conducted to ensure that two-wheeler drivers use helmets. A senior police officer said though the number of helmet users has gone up but still many young people are not using helmets. Recently, a college student and her fiancé died on Ma flyover after the motorcycle they were travelling in hit the road divider. Both of them died on the spot.

The police have intensified vigil and asked the owners not to use LED lamps in their cars as it causes great inconvenience to drivers coming from the opposite direction. Many two and three-wheeler drivers are using this lamp in their vehicles.

Snehashis Chakraborty, state transport minister said a stringent law to stop this menace will come shortly. The police said drivers were taught the right method of using headlamps.

During the interactive sessions, people urged the police to take up the matter of repairing potholes with the civic authorities to avert accidents. They alleged that the police was not taking any action against the youths driving two wheelers without helmets in some areas.
