Eastern Railway which is popularly known as passenger carrying railway zone, now also emerged as the major freight carrier in Eastern India. Despite its prime involvement in the transport sector, Eastern Railway is taking all-round endeavour to develop sports activities and augment sports infrastructure in this region to nurture young talent and promote a culture of athletic excellence.
Three years ago Eastern Railway launched an innovative mission to promote sports habits among youngsters. Leveraging outstanding sports infrastructure and local talent, a cricket academy was inaugurated in April 2022 at the Behala Sports Complex.
This initiative aligned seamlessly with Indian Railways’ longstanding commitment to sports and translated into action the Prime Minister’s “Khelo India, Khelo” programme. Commercial profit was never the objective; thus, fees were set far below market rates, with additional concessions for children of railway employees. Under the expert supervision of skilled trainers, the academy focused on nurturing budding talents. The community response was overwhelming—so much so that the academy reached full capacity in a short time.
The Swimming and Diving Academy at Gholsapur Sports complex offers world-class facilities. Divers Subham Hore and Abhra Sardar have already earned silver medals at national competitions.
Most recently, in April, Eastern Railway launched the ‘Lakshya’ Chess Academy, staffed by top-quality trainers—including grandmasters. From its inception, it has been recognised as a centre of excellence.
