Kolkata: A 24-hour free emergency ambulance service has been introduced by New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) for the residents of New Town. People can avail the services by calling the toll-free NKDA helpline number at 18001037652. The authorities have put up the helpline number along with the contact numbers of the ambulance drivers on the NKDA website."Several residents of the township had requested for a free 24-hour ambulance service for their emergency medical requirements. The ambulance will have basic medical facilities to assist patients on their way to nearby hospitals during medical emergencies. The service will, however, not be available for patients with communicable diseases," said an NKDA official. Three persons have been appointed to drive the ambulance in three different shifts — morning shift (6 am to 2 pm), afternoon shift (2 pm to 10 pm) and night shift (10 pm to 6 am). Officials said that this ambulance facility was available previously but was interrupted due to administrative issues like unavailability of drivers to run the service for 24 hours.
