  • 123456 Kolkata: A trader from Rajasthan was lynched and his relative was left severely injured on the roadside in Behala Bakultala following allegations of the duo selling fake gold jewellery to a local gold shop owner. Probing into the case, police have so far arrested eight persons, including a promoter, based on the survivor's complaint, CCTV footage and witness statements. The incident came to light around 2.30 am on Sunday when a police patrol team from Parnasree police station spotted a severely injured man lying on the roadside in a bloodied state near Dharmarajtala in Behala. The man identified himself as Deepak Singh (33), and upon being questioned, he told the officers that he and his relative Mahender Singh (55) were severely assaulted by a group of men known to them sometime ago and that he somehow ran away from their clutches, leaving the elderly relative behind."Acting on this information, a search was conducted, leading to the discovery of Mahender Singh's body lying in front of 9, MG Saha Road. No blood was found at this location, suggesting that the place of discovery was not the primary crime scene," said a senior officer of Kolkata Police. "Injured Deepak and an unresponsive Mahender were immediately shifted to Vidyasagar Hospital, where the latter was declared dead on arrival by an attending doctor."Based on the statement of Deepak, a complaint was lodged against Sanjib Karmakar, Biswajit Biswas alias Biju — the promoter — Chandan Ghosh, and other unknown associates. Police arrested them on Sunday morning and charged them with BNS sections related to murder, attempt to murder and common intention.Initial investigation revealed that Deepak and Mahender, both from Bharatpur, Rajasthan, allegedly sold fake gold ornaments to the accused persons. After realising the fraud, the accused — Karmakar, Biswas, Ghosh and others — reportedly lured the victims to an under-construction building owned by Biswas under the pretext of resolving the matter. It was here, police believe, the two were brutally assaulted, leading to Mahender's death."We have seized the alleged fake gold ornaments as evidence. The detective department has been informed, and the scientific wing has also been informed as we are jointly investigating the case," the officer said.Last week, a 36-year-old man, Sikander Azam, was severely thrashed by a neighbourhood tough, Rocky, and his aides, who suspected him of stealing a mobile on Kustia Road in Karaya. While four persons were arrested in this case, Azam is still hospitalised, and his condition continues to be critical, cops said.
