123 Kolkata: The massive blaze that broke out at a chemical and diaper manufacturing warehouse in Barasat's Bamunmura area off Taki Road on Saturday evening continued to rage son Sunday. More than 50 fire engines remained deployed, working round-the-clock to douse pockets of fire across the industrial complex.According to local sources, the inferno gutted an entire stretch of the complex, including a chemical factory and at least 8 to 10 adjoining warehouses. The fire broke out around 7.30 pm on Saturday, quickly spreading from one godown to another, triggering widespread panic in the surrounding neighbourhood. Around 80 families in the area were evacuated. Most of them, however, returned home on Sunday. On Sunday morning, local MLA Rahima Mondal and Barasat sub-divisional officer Soma Das visited the site and assured that no human casualties were reported. "The area was evacuated immediately after the fire broke out," the officials said. Terming the incident "very unfortunate," MLA Mondal expressed relief that lives were saved. "Thankfully, there was no loss of life. We evacuated people safely," she said. "The administration will probe the cause. There will be no leniency in action against lapses. I appreciate the fire department's swift response. Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar also monitored the operation," Das said. But locals alleged that the unit and warehouses lacked proper fire-fighting arrangements.
