• Bengal: Major fire at Barasat factory complex, many godowns gutted

  • A major fire broke out at a warehouse and factory complex spanning over 30 bighas in Barasat’s Bamunmora Kadambagachi area around 7 pm on Saturday. Over 20 fire engines reached the spot and began efforts to douse the flames.

    According to local residents, around 80 families have been evacuated from the spot. The warehouse complex stored paints, air-conditioners etc.

    A fire brigade official told mediapersons, “As a precautionary measure, residents have been evacuated. 20 fire engines on spot . The reason for the fire will be investigated. Till now, there is no information on whether anyone is trapped inside. We will investigate if any illegal work was going on.”

    Local authorities, including the Barasat SDPO and additional SP, also reached the spot to coordinate emergency response efforts. A large police contingent, including Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Combat Force, reached the spot.

    Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar told mediapersons, “I have spoken to fire minister Sujit Bose to bring in more fire engines. I have also spoken to the SP, he is sending more force. This is a massive fire. The first priority is to douse the flames then the entire matter will be investigated: Whether combustible materials were stored, was trade license there or not…”

    Traffic on the busy Taki Road came to a standstill for several hours due to the fire and subsequent emergency response. Local residents joined the fire brigade in efforts to check the flames. A section of them staged a protest, alleging that the factory was operating illegally.
