  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Police arrested two individuals, Kundan Mishra (33) and Debjani Nag Biswas (52), from north Bengal on Friday for extorting Rs 3.4 crore from a 72-year-old man from Golpark, threatening him with "digital arrest". The accused posed as police officers and threatened the senior citizen would be arrested for allegedly uploading pornographic content on a website."The accused, Mishra, a self-proclaimed advocate at the Jalpaiguri court, and Biswas, a clerk at Siliguri Municipality, were arrested following a two-month probe into a cyber fraud case that was registered on Nov 1 last year," said joint CP (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar. Police seized a laptop, three mobiles and several bank documents from them. According to the complainant, he lost Rs 3.4 crore after being targeted by the scamsters impersonating officers from TRAI, Mumbai Police and the cybercrime department. The incident, which occurred on Sept 18, 2024, began with a call, accusing him of uploading pornographic content online. The fraudsters then obtained the victim's Aadhaar details and sent forged Supreme Court orders to coerce him. Using threats against his family, they forced him into liquidating his investments and transferring funds to multiple accounts.The fraudsters also allegedly created fake documents bearing logos of ED, RBI, and CBI. They then persuaded the victim to transfer his life savings under the guise of a govt scheme for black money recovery.
