  • 12 Kolkata: Owner of a factory in Kamarhati's Salpatabagan area, Aloke Biswas, was arrested on Saturday after two workers died in a suspected toxic gas leak there on Friday. United Electrochem Industry is located under ward 28 of Kamarhati Municipality. He has been booked under BNS sections of 279, 280 (for making the atmosphere noxious to health) and 106 (causing death by negligence). On Friday evening, Surojit Maity (55) of Sodepur and Robin Hait (60) of Baranagar died during a routine cleaning work at the factory.Another worker, Gobinda Nandy (60) of Barrackpore, is critical at College of Medicine and Sagor Dutta Medical College and Hospital. "Preliminary probe suggests that the accident took place while workers were trying to dispose of residual chemicals from a drum," deputy commissioner (south) of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, Anupam Singh, said. Fire brigade personnel have secured the area. Cops have sealed the factory and started a probe. A forensic team may visit the site. It is being probed whether the factory had valid licences.
