  • Kolkata: A constable and a civic volunteer with the port division of Kolkata Police have been removed from duty following viral videos showing them allegedly extorting money from motorists in the West Port PS area. The constable from West Port police station was suspended and a civic volunteer from the river traffic police was relieved of duty after videos surfaced on social media showing them allegedly collecting money from vehicles at checkpoints. The first incident, recorded on June 14, showed patrolling cops stopping vehicles to collect money, leading to the constable's suspension on Wednesday. The second video from June 13 captured a civic volunteer allegedly taking money during a checkpoint inspection, resulting in his removal on Thursday."A thorough departmental probe has been launched to establish the facts of the case, including the authenticity of the video and the exact nature of the transaction that took place," said a senior police officer. This marks the fourth instance this year of KP officers being suspended for either extortion or misconduct towards drivers. In all cases, local police — not traffic police — were implicated.According to senior officers at Lalbazar, both will remain suspended pending the investigation's completion. The prebe team will submit their findings to senior authorities "at the earliest", after which further action will be determined.
