  • Kolkata: Jadavpur University has been operating without a finance officer since Monday, a crucial post in the daily functioning of the institute. Teachers said numerous files and payments are pending.Sources said the term of the acting finance officer ended on Friday. JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Ray said, "This position is so important that even a single day's vacancy can halt many operations. If certain statutory payments are not made, JU could even face closure. Earlier, the term of the acting registrar also ended, but in that case, higher education department extended the term before it expired. They are intentionally complicating matters for the finance officer, which is adversely affecting teachers, students and staffers. We protest against this and if the issue is not resolved by this week, we will launch a movement next Monday."An official said, "The university informed higher education dept well in advance and even suggested the name. On Tuesday, a letter from the dept asked if the acting finance officer is willing to perform the duty, details of his service, if the acting officer is going to retire, and in that case, asked the varsity to recommend a person who can act as finance officer in addition to his duties."
