  • 123 Kolkata: The public swimming pool at Rabindra Sarobar, where a 16-year-old accidentally drowned on Sunday, will remain shut for at least a week until the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) and police come up with a standard operating procedure (SOP) or user manual for people to safely use the pool for swimming activities.A day after the tragic incident, KMDA officials conducted an inspection of the pool to assess its current condition. The authorities have informed the clubs, asking them not to access the swimming pool water from their end until further notice."Mails have been sent to them, and the police have also asked the clubs not to use the water from the public swimming pool. The clubs can continue using their own pools as usual. We will hold further discussions with the police, and an operative procedure is likely to be prepared. The pool is to remain shut for public entry for at least a week," said a KMDA official on Monday. The public swimming pool, which is open to all, is opened and closed by a lone guard every day and remains open from 6 am to 10 am on all days except Monday.Lake regulars and environmentalists staged a protest demonstration on Monday, complaining of a lack of maintenance and absence of safety measures. After the demonstration, the protestors met Rabindra Sarobar police officers to air their concerns."The authorities must take up necessary corrective measures," said Sabuj Mancha general secretary Naba Dutta.
