• City colleges take to social media to hold on to flock in admission season

  • Kolkata: Several colleges in the city are taking to various social media platforms to promote different activities and facilities of the institutions. They aim to attract good students in undergraduate courses and stop seats from going vacant.The centralised admission portal for UG admission is set to go live from June 18. Many principals have been waiting eagerly ever since the board results were declared more than a month ago. They expressed concern over the delayed start of the admission process. They fear that filling up seats will be an issue as many students have already taken admission in private or minority institutions, while some have left the state for institutes outside Bengal.New Alipore College principal Jaydeep Sarangi said: "Our strategy is to promote the achievements of our college, the facilities we offer like internships and job fairs on different social media platforms so that students know why they should be choosing our college. In an age of competition, social media will help us to attract good students."Vidyasagar College for Women regularly posts on its Facebook page about their laboratory infrastructure ramp-up, summer internship programmes, different workshops and seminars, and hostel facilities to reach out to large sections of society, especially students.Asutosh College principal Manas Kabi said: "The college as well as individual departments have their own social media pages from where we post different events, activities, and achievements to reach out to a large section of students. The college also has a YouTube channel. It helps students to know what added advantages they will get apart from traditional teaching and learning if they choose my college."Maulana Azad College principal Krishnendu Dutta shared that they were also taking the social media route to make applicants aware of the additional benefits that the college offered, like a variety of certificate courses. "We will launch an entrepreneurship cell to give social entrepreneurship training to our students, especially female students. This information has been put up on social media platforms. Apart from this, different academic and co-curricular activities, events, seminars, and facilities are continuously being posted to attract students to our college."
