12 Kolkata: A spell of sharp rain and clouds on Saturday morning kept the mercury in check, but Kolkata remained humid and uncomfortable. The city also witnessed scattered rain on Saturday evening. The maximum temperature was 33.9°C on Saturday. While no significant change in temperature is likely during the next 24 hours, it could rise gradually by three to five degrees over the next four days, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) predicted. While the maximum temperature remained below normal, the moisture and the resultant high humidity kept the real feel temperature high on Saturday. The city received moderate rain last Thursday under the impact of a depression that sailed across south Bengal. It was expected that the depression would trigger heavier showers, but it veered away towards Bangladesh. "Since there is little chance of heavy rain in south Bengal over the next week, the arrival of the monsoon is unlikely," added Biswas. The maximum temperature is set to climb to 34-35°C on Monday and hover around that mark for the next three to four days, even as north Bengal gets lashed by heavy rain, said the Met office. While Kolkata received 2.4 mm of rain on Saturday, the showers could dwindle further over the next week, said RMC weather scientist HR Biswas. "Since warm westerly winds have started flowing into the region, the temperature will now rise. It will also remain humid due to moisture incursion from the sea. The combination of the two could trigger an occasional thunderstorm over the next few days, but it will generally remain dry and humid," said Biswas.A bulletin issued by the RMC, however, said, "Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at many places over the districts of Gangetic Bengal," said the RMC bulletin.
