12 Kolkata/Bolpur: Birbhum Trinamool strongman Anubrata Mondal failed to appear before the Bolpur sub-divisional police office on Saturday, prompting cops to issue a second notice, asking him to present himself by 11am on Sunday.Mondal cited "ill-health" for skipping the police summons, issued after an audio clip surfaced where he was purportedly heard abusing and threatening Bolpur IC Liton Halder and his family. "The TMC neta is unwell and couldn't be present," his lawyers said. At least four of them came to the SDPO.BJP intensified its demands for Mondal's arrest, with party workers staging protests at Rampurhat PS on Saturday. The opposition party also filed additional FIRs at multiple police stations, including Sainthia, Rampurhat and Suri.Birbhum police chief Amandeep said on Friday that an FIR had been lodged against Mondal under multiple BNS sections, including non-bailable ones.State leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari criticised the police response, suggesting that the charges were deliberately "minor". "Nothing will happen to Anubrata. He will get bail. Instead, you'll see the IC getting suspended," he said.A source at Bhabani Bhawan hinted that further action would be considered if Mondal failed to comply with Sunday's notice too. "All legal options are open and are being discussed through proper channels," said a senior official. The controversy erupted after the four-minute clip went viral. In the tape, a person could be heard hurling abuses and threats, including of physical harm, to Halder. The person was also heard abusing and threatening the IC's wife and mother. While initially denying the authenticity of the clip, Mondal issued an unconditional apology after the TMC leadership set him a four-hour deadline on Friday, acknowledging that he spoke "in anger"."I should not have said those things. I am sorry", Mondal said, but also questioned the circumstances surrounding the leak. He attributed his behaviour to medication and an emotional response to alleged police misconduct against a party worker's son.
