• Baby among 3 of family killed in elephant attack

  • Jalpaiguri: An infant was among three members of a family killed in an elephant attack in Alipurduar's Falakata early on Saturday. The deceased were Manoj Das, 35, his mother Makhanrani, 68, and his 35-day-old daughter Manisha.A herd of 20 elephants had entered Kunjanagar village from the adjacent forest, and a tusker strayed towards Sabhapati More area when Manoj had ventured out of his house. As he came in front of the tusker, the elephant trampled him to death. Hearing his cries, Makhanrani came out of the house with Manisha in her arms. As the elephant attacked Makhanrani, the girl fell off her arms and got trampled too.The three were rushed to Falakata Superspecialty Hospital but were declared brought dead. Locals staged a blockade on the Kunjanagar-Falakata road, demanding repairing of electric fences to prevent elephants from entering the village. The forest department has assured compensation to the bereaved family.
