Kolkata: Early on Saturday morning, people walking along the road in Bharatgarh, Basanti, witnessed a chilling sight: a middle-aged man walking down the main road with a woman's severed head in one hand and a chopper in the other. The incident occurred around 8 am on Saturday in Bharatgarh, Basanti. The man, Bimal Mondal, 55, wearing a blue striped T-shirt, walked to the police station and told cops the head was that of his sister-in-law, Sati Mondal, whom he had murdered. Locals said there had been tension between the families of the murdered woman and the accused for some time. Neighbours claimed that the husband of the murdered woman committed suicide three months earlier due to an illicit relationship between Bimal's wife and Sati's husband. Others, however, claimed that the families were at loggerheads over a property dispute. That the two families were neighbours meant they were constantly squabbling. Ever since the death of Sati's husband, the families had been accusing each other. The bitterness had been growing for the last three months and reached a flashpoint on Saturday morning when Bimal got into an argument with Sati over a prperty claim and charged at her with a chopper, said neighbours. According to Kamal Mondal, a local resident, a dispute over picking mangoes triggered the fatal attack. The duty officer at Basanti police station was taken aback when the accused, Bimal Mondal, confessed, "I have killed my sister-in-law, Sati Mondal; this is her severed head." Other police officers quickly closed the main gate and apprehended the killer. After hearing the details, a police team set out and recovered the middle-aged woman's body from Bharatgarh.
