  • 123 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered a joint inspection of the heritage buildings of La Martiniere School for Boys on Monday to examine the cracks on the building roof. The building was constructed nearly 200 years ago in 1832.A vacation bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh and Justice Smita Das De directed the team, comprising two executive engineers of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), one representative of the West Bengal Heritage Commission, and one representative from the three petitioners, including the school authorities, to reach the school on June 2, Monday, between 12 noon and 3 pm. They will inspect the school and take a call on the urgency of the repair work, as pleaded by the counsel for the school. The bench directed the KMC and the heritage commission not to wait for the court order to take a decision in this regard and instead directed them to submit a report to the court on June 5.The school preferred an appeal against the single bench order on May 22 that had directed the school not to carry out any building repair without the approval of the Heritage Commission and KMC.Counsel for the school took the ‘urgency' plea on the ground that the repair couldn't wait for the sake of the children's safety. The counsel submitted to the bench that hours ahead of the impugned order, a chunk from a portion of the roof fell on May 21.
