Kolkata: A young mother was allegedly harassed and verbally abused by a group of local miscreants during her morning workout session at Dhankal Maath playground in the Kasba area on Saturday . The victim, a resident of Kasba, reported that on May 24 morning, three to four men began hurling verbal abuses at the playground where families, including children, were present for their morning exercises. When she protested against their behaviour, two of the men reportedly approached her and allegedly attempted to secretly record her workout session using a mobile phone placed on playground equipment. "I went to Dhankal Maath under Kasba PS, along with my husband for a morning workout. Around 6.30 am, 3 to 4 men were found hurling verbal abuses inside the playground. I protested since it was vitiating the morning serenity in the playground where all age groups of males, females, and children were present," the victim said. "After some time, to my surprise, I found that two of the men out of the 3 to 4 men came suspiciously very close to me andI realised that they were trying to take a video of me doing the workout. Again I raised an alarmagainst such inappropriate acts compromising the modesty of a female in a public place with ulterior motives.""They started to again hurl verbal abuses against me and tried to outrage my modesty. Seeing this, my husband, who was doing his workouts on the other end of the ground, rushed to my rescue. The people who were also present in the playground then also tried to intervene but in vain. Those men instead started threatening us with dire consequences and later assembled outside the playground with some other locals to seek revenge. The men and women who were witnessing the entire incident inside the playground came to our rescue outside the playground and prevented any anticipated mishap," the complaint stated."These incidents are becoming increasingly common in the age of AI and technology, where such recordings can be misused for criminal purposes," said a senior police officer. The victim expressed concerns about potential retaliation, noting that the accused are local residents who could pose a threat to her family's safety, including her minor son who regularly visits the playground. The Kasba Police registered a complaint and initiated an investigation into the incident. "We are taking this matter seriously and will ensure appropriate action against those responsible," said the investigating officer. The incident has raised concerns about women's safety in public spaces and the misuse of technology for harassment. Residents have demanded increased police patrolling in the area during morning hours. Police have urged witnesses to come forward with any information about the incident and advised morning exercisers to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities immediately.
