  • TEN PERSONS were arrested after a mob of around 150 people allegedly barged into a police station in the Bangaon area of North 24 Parganas, in West Bengal on Wednesday, demanding that a man who earlier allegedly stabbed and injured four persons be “handed over” to them. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd, leading to the arrests.

The incident took place after a “mentally unstable” 35-year-old man went on a “stabbing spree”, an officer said. Police soon apprehended him and brought him to the station.

Citing local residents, sources claimed that the stabbing suspect may also be involved in the murder of his parents. A seven-member police team has been formed to verify this claim and carry out further investigation, said an officer.

Soon, a large mob, including some people who are from the area where the four people were stabbed, gathered on the premises of the police station, the officer said.
“The mob demanded that the accused be handed over to them. Police dispersed the crowd and arrested 10 persons,” said Bangaon Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar
A search is on to nab others involved in the “attempted vandalism”, police said. Police force has been deployed in the area.
In a post on X, the Bangaon police wrote, “There is no communal angle to the incident. Request all not to heed any kind of rumours. Rumour-mongers, as always, will be sternly dealt with as per law.”
