12 Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday said that while it supports the Centre's global outreach against terrorism, any govt's foremost responsibility is "to be accountable to its own people." Party MPs, who gathered in the central hall of Parliament, signed a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss Operation Sindoor, the events leading up to it and those that followed. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier called on the Centre to convene this special session. The party's deputy leader in Rajya Sabha, Sagarika Ghose, told reporters, "Today, Trinamool Congress parliamentary parties (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) met in the Central Hall of Parliament. We have all signed a letter to the PM, requesting that a special session of Parliament be held after the MPs' delegation returns from their travels on 5 June. We met and observed a silence for those martyred at the border and those who lost their lives in Pahalgam."In a post on X, the party stated, "We welcome the Centre's outreach in taking India's stand against terrorism to the global stage. But the first duty of any govt is to be accountable to its own people. To that end, our parliamentary party convened in the Central Hall and has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a special session of Parliament." "Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has said that while we have fully cooperated with the Centre by sending participants in delegations abroad to voice India's resolve against Pakistan-based terrorism, it is time to convene a special session of Parliament. Citizens of India also need to be informed about the central govt's measures in combating Pakistan-based terrorism," Ghose added. The party's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, said, "By calling for a special session in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, we have written to the Prime Minister so that there is an opportunity to discuss how such attacks occurred and what steps are being taken to address them."
