  • A leader of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing, was arrested by the Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) with illegal ammunition in the city’s Esplanade area late Sunday night, officials said.

The accused, Ramkrishna Majhi, the BJYM’s executive president of Ketugram block in Purba Bardhaman district, will be produced in court.

A total of 120 bullets were recovered from him, the STF said.

The Purba Bardhaman police said they received a tip-off from the STF on Sunday evening that Majhi, a resident of Kulun village in Ketugram, was carrying illegal ammunition. The police conducted a search at his house but did not find anything. Majhi was also not there at the time, they said.

Majhi, however, arrived at Kolkata later in the night in a state roadways bus and got off at Esplanade’s B12 bus stand where he was detained. He was formally arrested after he failed to provide a satisfactory explanation on carrying the ammunition.

In a statement, the police said 100 bullets were of a 8 mm calibre gun and 20 of a 7.65 mm calibre gun.

Lakshman Mondal, a local TMC leader, alleged that Majhi was involved in trafficking of drug and arms and would threaten villagers with firearms.

Majhi’s wife, however, rejected the allegations, saying, “I think someone trapped him in this case for money.”

BJP leader Sajal Ghosh said, “As far as I know, he has not been associated with the BJP for years. But if he has done anything wrong, he should be punished whether he is associated with the BJP or TMC.”
