The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested Dr Tapan Kumar Jana, the head of the Anatomy Department at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh.
Dr Jana, who also served as an assessor with the National Medical Commission (NMC), allegedly demanded a bribe for a favourable inspection report for a private medical college in Belagavi, Karnataka, sources in the CBI said.
The arrest followed a night-long raid and search operation at Dr Jana’s residence in Bardhaman town. During the searches, the CBI said it recovered an additional Rs 44.6 lakh in cash, bringing the total cash seizure to Rs 54.6 lakh. Incriminating documents and articles were also seized, they said.
The CBI had registered a case against Dr Jana, two individuals, and the private medical institute based in Belgavi, Karnataka, on Saturday.
It was alleged that Dr Jana, in his capacity as an NMC assessor, demanded a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from representatives of the private medical college in exchange for a positive inspection report for their institute.
Acting on this information, the CBI laid a trap and caught him accepting the bribe of Rs 10 lakh from the college representatives.
Simultaneous searches were carried out by the CBI at residential and official premises of those associated with Dr Jana at various locations in Kolkata, Bardhaman, and Belgaum.
