IN A shocking incident, the son of a road accident victim was allegedly told by police personnel to pick up his father’s body parts. The accident took place in Guskara, Purba Bardhaman district, around 8 am on Monday.
However, in a video released later through a social media handle of Purba Bardhaman police, Sudip Das, 20, is purportedly seen claiming that he was “not forced or coerced” by police personnel to pick up the body parts of his father.
“The victim’s son did not lodge any complaint (till date). But I have seen a video. I have asked the zonal DSP (deputy commissioner of police) to carry out an inquiry,” said Sayak Das, Superintendent of Police, Purba Bardhaman, on Tuesday.
According to sources, Pradip Kumar Das (60) a local lottery ticket vendor, was mowed down by a dumper, transporting stones, while he was returning home. The accident took place near Guskara bus stand around 8 am. Pradip was a resident of Sirishtolla under ward number 11 in Guskara municipality.
Pradip’s son Sudip reached the spot after being informed. By then, a crowd had gathered. A police team reached the spot and allegedly asked him to pick up the body parts. Sudip collected the body parts in a sack. He also helped policemen pick up the body.
“The police team handed over a sack and told me you are the [victim’s] son, you pick up the body parts,” Sudip claimed to mediapersons.
Sudip is a student at Visva Bharati University and also lives in Guskara.
“Under the TMC’s rule, the police seem to have lost humanity. The police personnel involved should be punished,” said Mrityunjoy Chandra, the BJP’s district vice president.
