  • Kolkata: More students from across Bengal universities have made it to the toppers’ list of GATE 2024. Among these toppers, Samparna Mittra from St Xavier’s College and Soumya Biswas from Jadavpur University have bagged all-India second rank in economics and chemical engineering respectively.

    Earlier, TOI had reported that nine students — Barninee Das in economics (AIR 2), Jaydeep Ray (AIR 1) and Anisur Hoque (AIR 6) in geology and geophysics, Kaustav Guha Roy in electrical engineering (AIR 6), trans non-binary Dhrubajyoti Patra (AIR 1) in ecology and evolution, Raja Majhi in electronics and communication (AIR 1), Srishti Datta in psychology (AIR 1), Shreya Ghosh (AIR 24) and Aishee Chakraborty (AIR 43) in biotechnology and biomedical engineering — were among the GATE 2024 toppers.

    Third-year student, Mittra aspires to doMasters from reputed institutions like IIT- Madras, IIT- Kanpur, IIT-Delhi, Delhi School of Economics or any other institute where the GATE score is applicable. “I always wanted to perform my best in these exams as it will give me an opportunity to study in a prestigious institution. Moreover, it will pave my way for pursuing research,” said Mittra, adding that she is thankful to her teachers for encouraging her to research.

    For Biswas, this feat was beyond expectation. “ The paper was tough and I could not answer all the questions. I could not believe the result. I was travelling and checked my result thrice to be sure of the rank. It took me some time to fall in sync with that feeling ,” said Biswas, adding that he wants to explore job opportunities in PSUs like the Engineers India Limited and Indian Oil Corporation.

    Debarghya Chakrabarti, who secured an all-India rank six in chemical engineering, is a fourth-year student of Jadavpur University’s chemical engineering department. “It is a dream come true moment for me. I started preparing for the exam during the pandemicand I got ample time to revise and practice,” Chakrabarti said. He aims to apply in PSUs for jobs as well. Both Biswas and Chakrabarti are indebted to their university teachers.

    IIEST students — Deepak Kumar Pandey and Chandresh Patel bagged all-India rank 12 and 18 in mining engineering and engineering sciences respectively. Pandey, who was confident about his preparation and emphasizes that concepts need to be clear to crack the exam, aspires to work for Coal India or NTPC. “It is important to be curious and balance academics and other interests in life,” he added.
