• 4 dead; cops arrest 436, prosecute 3,000 on Holi

  • Kolkata: Four revellers lost their lives in and around Kolkata and three others were severely injured as the city celebrated Dol on Monday. Cops have arrested 436 people — the highest since 2019 — and prosecuted over 3,000 bikers and motorists since Monday.

    While two bikers died in fatal accidents on Monday, a third death was reported due to drowning in the city.At Howrah’s Bagnan, a 52-year-old came under the wheels of a truck.

    Rajen Halder, a 28-year-old resident of Naskarhat in Kasba, was reportedly hit by a truck on Nonadanga Road near Anandapur around 3.10pm. Halder was not even wearing a helmet. He was declared dead at the NRS Medical College. Cops said he was returning home after playing Dol.

    Another young man, a resident of the Kolkata Leather Complex area, was found lying dead on the Maa flyover, close to the Park Circus 7-point Crossing, around 1.15 pm. Prima facie, cops claim he was a biker who was hit by an unidentified vehicle. The cops have identified the victim as Saikat Mullick (23). He was declared dead at the CNMC Hospital.

    Tapas Karmakar, a 52-year-old resident of Bangalpur in Howrah, died after the truck hit a customized three-wheeler in which he was returning home after playing Holi. The accident led to a strong protest from locals who even blocked the road briefly.

    On Monday, 160 riders and motorists were found drink-driving. Cops seized close to 47 litres of alcohol during checks at naka points. Last year, cops had arrested 409 people and seized 57 litres of alcohol in 48 hours.

    This year, three guards — East, South East and Tiljala — saw maximum prosecutions. Behala saw the maximum number of drink-driving cases.
