  • Kolkata: Members of the investigation team that had been set up by KMC to probe into the Garden Reach building collapse went to Azhar Mollah Bagan Lane on Tuesday to look at the site and collect samples of concrete and steel from the rubble.

The team, which included director general of civil engineering department at KMC, also identified a spot where boring will be done to test the soil and check the load-bearing capacity of the soil on which the collapsed building was being constructed.

Also present at the site were DGs of roads and buildings, chief engineer of solid waste management, three experts on structural engineering, soil and architecture in addition to Kolkata Police deputy commissioner of port and the OC of Garden Reach.

KMC officials and the experts also kept tabs on the razing of the collapsed building and suggested some corrective measures for the safe and efficient demolition in the extremely confined space.

Those probing the collapse are yet to get the collapsed building's architectural plan, including floor plan and engineering drawing that lays out the size of columns and beam as well as steel and concrete to be used in them.

Engineers looking into why the building collapsed into a year of its construction said without the drawings, it was challenging to decide on what kind of columns or beams were required and what kind of steel and concrete should have been used in the building.

They plan to work in reverse by drawing the plan and calculating what was required to ensure the structural safety of the building before comparing the actual construction that had taken place at the site and materials that were used. The soil test will also be done to throw light on whether the foundation was inadequate and contributed to the collapse.
